HISTORIC ASHLAND HOME
Residential Interior Design
Received the City of Ashland Historic Preservation Award
Located in Ashland’s historic Railroad District, this 1910 Craftsman-style residence underwent a complete “down-to-the-studs” renovation to restore the character and craftsmanship of the original home while adapting it for contemporary family living. The property had previously been converted into a bed-and-breakfast, and the renovation sought to thoughtfully return the structure to its original residential purpose while enhancing the interiors for modern life.
The project included a comprehensive redesign of the interior architecture, featuring a partially reconfigured floor plan, new lighting, plumbing, electrical, and HVAC systems, and extensive built-in millwork throughout. A spacious gourmet kitchen with a breakfast nook addition were designed to better support everyday living and gathering. Formal living and dining spaces were carefully restored with custom bookcases designed to house the family’s extensive library collections, along with a custom millwork fireplace, built-in window seats, and detailed architectural mouldings that reinforce the home’s historic character.
Private living areas were redesigned, including an enlarged primary bedroom suite with a new bathroom, walk-in closets, and an adjoining sitting area. Children’s and guest bedrooms, along with their accompanying bathrooms, were fully updated. Additional spaces—including a game room, mudroom, laundry room, home office, and welcoming entry foyer—were thoughtfully planned to support contemporary living while maintaining the integrity of the original architecture.
A rich palette of period-inspired finishes was selected throughout the home, including traditional cabinetry, classic millwork profiles, hardwood flooring, extensive tilework, and historically appropriate lighting, plumbing fixtures, appliances, and hardware. Decorative wallpapers and layered materials add warmth and authenticity while reinforcing the historic character of the home.
A new exterior studio outbuilding, designed by the project architect, was created to house a private office and library. The interior architecture was designed by our firm, including extensive custom built-ins for the client’s collection of books and historical maps, along with a fully appointed bathroom. Through careful planning and thoughtful architectural detailing, the renovation balances historic authenticity with modern comfort. The completed home honors the spirit of the original residence while providing a refined and highly functional family home for its new owners. The project was also recognized by the City of Ashland with a Historic Preservation Award.
“We have finally moved into our house in Ashland and want to tell you how much we appreciate the wonderful job you did designing it for us. Every architectural detail turned out beautifully, and the lighting design is perfect. It really is spectacular and we are enjoying it very much.”
