Rocket Donuts

Restaurant Interior Design

NW AIA Design Award

This new construction donut and ice cream shop was conceived as an immersive, retro-futuristic experience inspired by the owner’s extensive collection of vintage sci-fi film posters, props, and memorabilia. The interior celebrates this identity through curated displays integrated into the architecture, transforming the space into a dynamic, story-driven environment.

A commissioned mural by a Seattle artist anchors the double-height volume above the service counter, depicting a 1950s-style UFO invasion of the owner’s dairy farm in Acme, Washington — where the ice cream is produced. Suspended overhead, a custom rocket installation reinforces the theatrical concept while activating the vertical space.

Industrial finishes including stainless steel, aluminum detailing, polished concrete, and vibrant glass tile reference mid-century futurism, while bold accent colors and neon signage energize the experience. The result is a lively, memorable retail environment that blends nostalgia, humor, and craftsmanship — inviting guests to enjoy locally made donuts and ice cream within a fully realized sci-fi narrative.
