Smile City Square
This project received the 2010 Interior Design Institute of BC Design Award
Our Client’s philosophy of “Enriching lives. One smile at a time” was key to providing direction in the overall design of his new space. Dr. Mah desired an organic and Zen-style design, to help relax potentially stressed patients, as well as create a space that reflects his relaxed, positive, and truly caring personality. It was such a pleasure designing Dr. Mah’s office, with his attention to detail, and appreciation for fine art and design. The 40-foot high ceiling provided the perfect opportunity to design an open and organic feeling office, encouraging natural light to flow throughout the space. Color changing LED-lights were selected to illuminate the custom fabric mobiles suspended from above the dental operatories. The carpet was selected to simulate Japanese Tatami mats, and the warm bamboo-looking casework, along with white finishes support the clean, yet natural, Zen-style. The 14-foot high reclaimed wood Torii gate, with river rock flooring beneath, was created to reflect the symbolic meaning of marking the transition from the mundane to the sacred (from the outside world to where lives are enriched). Dr. Mah was very proud of his new space, especially after his patients and friends who knew him well remarked that his new office feels exactly like him.
